The two characters are incredibly different to each other and yet they still somehow manage to find love in each other’s company.Ĭolor Wheel Pro – See Color Theory in Action (accessed: 25/12/16) These colours completely contrast each other, they’re at opposite ends of the colour wheel, yet this furthers the notion of opposites attracting. Whilst Jordana is often represented through the colour red, Oliver is represented through the colour blue. You pick up pieces of each other whether you intend to or not.įinally it’s worth pointing out the contrast between Oliver and Jordana. I’m guilty too – I’ve picked up a lot of things from my partner that I never used to do before I met them. This shows his devotion to Jordana and how easily it is to start sharing personality traits with someone who you spend your time with. There is also the use of red sneaking into Oliver’s outfits as the film progresses – the main item of clothing being the red jumper. There are also a few odd points that include red – such as Jordana ‘editing’ the relationship rules in a red pen, and the final shot of the film where the protagonists are stood on the beach in front of a red sunset. However like flares, the passion doesn’t last for very long and their love is extinguished as the fire goes out. Since this is during the ‘two weeks of love making’ it could be argued that the flares represent their burning love for each other. In the scene where Oliver and Jordana are laughing with flares whilst running through the abandoned fairground, the overlay of colour in the shots is red. Linked to the idea of violence is the idea of aggression. Although the act is never shown, it’s pretty clear to the viewer that Oliver has just been punched in the face. When he takes his hand away the brilliant red contrasts with his white hands. This leaves the protagonist lying on the floor clutching his nose. This can be seen most clearly in the scene where Jordana’s ex-boyfriend tries to force Oliver into admitting she is a ‘slut’. Red is also used in the film to represent violence.

Oliver was attempting to seduce Jordana, even if it didn’t quite work out the way he thought it was going to. The entire bedroom is filled with red – the balloons, the blanket, the candles, even the lighting is red. The same idea can be applied to the, admittedly, uncomfortable scene where Oliver and Jordana have sex for the first time. Secrecy is often used to imply seduction – which is a key connotation of the colour red. He spends the beginning of the film working out what she likes and tries to act upon this (an example – bullying in moderation). Jordana is a very secretive character which is what draws Oliver towards her.

The next is her red heart shaped sun glasses. The most striking thing about her visual appearance is her striking red coat, which she appears to always be wearing. Red is mainly linked to the character of Jordana, Oliver’s love interest. The film follows 15 year old Oliver Tate through his relationship with first girlfriend Jordana, and his complicated relationship with his parents.

It cast list includes Craig Roberts as Oliver Tate, Yasmin Paige as Jordana Bevan, Sally Hawkins as Jill Tate, Noah Taylor as Lloyd Tate, and Paddy Considine as Graham Purvis. Submarine is a coming of age romantic comedy based on the novel Submarine by Joe Dunthorne. This is exactly what Richard Ayoade (Director) and Erik Wilson (Cinematographer) have done in Ayoade’s debut film, Submarine. Directors and Cinematographers often use this to the For example light red is associated with passion, love, and sexuality whereas dark red is associated with anger, wrath, and rage. However different shades of red can often arouse different emotions within us and therefore have different connotations. Collectively we associate red with intense human emotions such as love and anger, which are perhaps two of the most powerful. It has many different meanings and allows people to feel a variety of emotions depending on the context in which it’s used -hence why it’s my favourite colour. Firstly, let’s discuss the connotations of the colour red.
